Blood supply

The superior cerebellar artery
  • Arises near the terminal bifurcation of the basilar artery

  • Supplies

    1) cortex

    2) The medullary center

    3) Central nuclei of the cerebellum

    4) Part of the pons, superior cerebellar peduncles and the inferior colliculi.

The anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA)

  • Arises from the caudal end of the basilar artery.

  • It supplies:
    1) The cortex of the inferior surface of the cerebellum anteriorly

    2) The underlying white matter

    3) Central cerebellar nuclei as well as upper medulla and the lower pons.

The posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA)
  • Largest branch of the vertebral artery.

  • It courses between the medullar and the cerebellum

  • Supplies:

    1) Posterior part of the cerebellum

    2)
Choroids plexus of the fourth ventricle.

    2) Gives branches to the dorsolateral region of the medulla.
